Sigulda (pps) In the pre-Olympic season Tobias Wendl-Tobias Arlt of Germany are pulling off one victory after the other. At the fourth stop of the Viessmann Luge World Cup series in Sigulda, Latvia, the European silver medalists claimed their fourth top podium finish and thus remain undefeated in the 2012-2013 season. Earning their 14th individual Viessmann Luge World Cup victory, the doubles from Bavaria defeated European Champions Peter Penz-Georg Fischler of Austria as well as Italy’s Christian Oberstolz-Patrick Gruber to second and third place, respectively.
After a first run with many little mistakes Austria’s two-time Olympic Champions Andreas Linger-Wolfgang Linger, who earned the first of their three World Championship titles in Sigulda, eventually had to settle for a fifth-place finish.
Wendl-Arlt are still leading the overall Viessmann Luge World Cup rankings with 400 points to their credit, ahead of Penz-Fischler (300) and Eggert-Benecken (GER / 282), who finished in eighth position and thus missed a podium finish for the first time this season.
The Viessmann Luge World Cup series is now taking a Christmas break. The next stop of the series is on the artificially iced track in Koenigssee on January 5-6, 2013.
Quotes
Tobias Wendl (GER / 2012 European runner-up)
“During our training runs we had difficulties in the middle part of track. But we analyzed our problems and then put it into practice in the second run. Even though we’re not so fast any more at the start we have improved our technique. And what is more – we’re having fun.”
Peter Penz (AUT / 2012 European Champion)
“With two such runs a second-place finish should be out of the question. Sigulda is not really one of our favorite tracks, to be quite honest. This is why we’re more than happy with our second place.”
Christian Oberstolz (ITA / 2008 European Champion)
“Finally another podium finish! We celebrated our last podium finish last year – here in Sigulda. It’s the 10th time that we’ve achieved a podium finish in Sigulda.“
