Georg Fischler cleared to compete in the World Championships

Innsbruck (RWH) Austria’s top doubles pairing of Peter Penz and Georg Fischler have been cleared to compete in the 47th World Championships of the International Luge Federation (FIL) in Innsbruck from 27-29 January 2017. A thorough examination by Dr Gerhard Pölzl has dispelled any lingering concerns following Fischler’s recent bout of myocarditis.
“I know that myocarditis is not something to be taken lightly, so on the advice of my doctors I stopped all training and got plenty of rest, apart from taking long walks”, Fischler explained. “I was examined today and all my values are absolutely fine, so I’m really relieved and also delighted that I can compete in the World Championships.”
However, the 31-year-old luger is playing down his medal prospects: “I’m not expecting a sporting miracle. Our medal chances are minuscule, but the fact that we have nothing to lose, and that we have a home advantage with all our fans behind us, might just play into our hands.”
