Berchtesgaden (RWH)  The National Federation of Georgia would like to send two lugers to compete in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang, Korea. This intention was announced by Felix Kumaritashvili, the president of the Georgian Luge Federation, on a visit to Josef Fendt (GER), the President of the International Luge Federation (FIL), in Berchtesgaden. Kumaritashvili confirmed that the athletes will take part in the qualification process.

During the discussion at the FIL office in Berchtesgaden, which was also attended by FIL Executive Director Christoph Schweiger, the World Federation assured Georgia of its support. The ongoing activities in the junior ranks receive considerable support from the FIL and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) through a range of development programmes.

The Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili sustained fatal injuries during a crash in final training at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada.
