German dominance: Julia Taubitz wins in sprint ahead of three teammates

Sprint WM Ladies

Koenigssee (FIL): Julia Taubitz experienced a real rollercoaster ride of emotions in the sprint competition of the 50th FIL World Championships at Koenigssee. After a mistake in the qualification, the 24-year-old from Saxony had to tremble for a long time about her entry among the 15 fastest athletes. Then she just managed to make it into the sprint final in 14th place.

In the final she gave a perfect run. This was the gold run. When the last luge lady crossed the finish line, the tension dissolved, a few tears rolled down her cheeks. "The gold medal means a lot to me," said Taubitz, beaming with joy, but did not forget to point out the race on Sunday: "But the individual race has a higher significance. There are two real runs that have to fit. But: it is a gold medal at a World Championship."

The success was made special because Anna Berreiter and Dajana Eitberger, two teammates, were still standing next to her on the podium. In addition, Natalie Geisenberger finished fourth. "I can sympathize with the girls when you wait and move further forward with each luger," said Eitberger, who at 30 years of age counts herself alongside Geisenberger as one of the old-timers on the German team. "I don't begrudge them this lump in the throat with all my heart. And I'm also happy for the girls from the team."

As the best non-German slider, Viktoriia Demchenko finished in fifth place. The athlete of the Russian Luge Federation was still the fastest in the qualification.
