Koenigssee (pps) The German public TV station Bayerischer Rundfunk, BR, presented a world première at the Viessmann Luge World Cup event on the artificially iced track in Koenigssee: for the first time a fore-runner provided live pictures of a point-of-view camera, built into the sled. Thanks to a special technique that is also used in the German touring car series DTM, these spectacular shots are made possible.
However, the prerequisites for these wireless TV shots from a moving sled are quite challenging - considering the steel and concrete constructions as well as the partially covered curves of the 1,300 metres long artificially-iced track in Koenigssee. Josef Fendt, President of the International Luge Federation, FIL, expressed his hopes for even more attractive TV transmissions of luge events thanks to this new technique. The International Federation is presently checking the feasibility to install these miniature cameras within the sleds of competitors in order to show live pictures during the competitions.
