Golden sisters: The Neuner family makes Olympic history

Innsbruck (FIL/22 Dec 2025) When the 1992 Winter Olympics were held in Albertville in the French Alps, Austria experienced one of the most remarkable chapters in its luge history. Two sisters from Tyrol – Doris and Angelika Neuner – stood together on the Olympic podium and set a historic milestone for their country and their sport.

Both athletes made their Olympic debut in the women's singles competition: Doris, aged just 20, won gold, while Angelika, aged 22, took the Olympic silver medal. Despite their young age, the sisters impressed on the demanding track in La Plagne with their remarkable calm and speed.

Doris Neuner dominated the competition and secured the gold medal. With this victory, she became the first Austrian Olympic champion in luge and also the youngest Olympic champion in luge since the 1968 Winter Games in Grenoble.
