Olang/Valdaora (ck) - „I did not even dare to think it, but I knew I can do it“, said Evelin Lanthaler (ITA) after her first world cup win in which she eventually upset serial winner Ekatharina Lavrentjeva (RUS) by almost half a second. “I thought a second place would be wonderful and the first place a small miracle.” But the small miracle already showed its signs in the training. It was not lost on Evelin Lanthaler and her team mates that Lavrentjeva did not deliver her usual times. “We saw this season that we are getting closer. Olang is one of Ekatharina’s favorite tracks and yet she was not ahead of us in the intermediate times. However, that I would beat her exactly here, I never would have thought so”, said Lanthaler, who now can add a first place to her so far 13 podium finishes. The defeated Russian did not have to do a lot of research to find the reasons: “I had a major mistake in the second combination in the top part, but I am also very tired from the European Championships last week. I am satisfied, though, as I made some more valuable points for the overall world cup.” Indeed, with a 90 point margin ahead of Tina Unterberger (AUT), who finished fifth today, Lavrentjeva’s tenth overall world cup win is only a matter of time. Leader after the first run, Greta Pinggera (ITA), became a victim of her nerves and eventually finished third. “I was surprised by the result yesterday, I did not expect to be first. Today I was very nervous as it was a new situation to start as the last and I made a mistake in the very first curve.” Ranked second after the first run, once again Patrick Pigneter (ITA) attacked fully in the second and upset Michael Scheikl (AUT), who had to settle for second place. “Every single time, I have to give all to win”, said Pigneter. “I lay the basis with my training in summer and constantly try to improve my equipment. I have managed to move another step forward this year, but the others are not far away. However, I can race without any pressure and I think this is why it is going so well.” With his 36th world cup win he tied Anton Blasbichler (ITA) in the number of career world cup podiums. The both stand at 50 now. Blasbichler missed the podium only closely and finished fourth. Not amused about his second place was Michael Scheikl: „Today it really hurts, I know I had it in my hands”, said the Austrian. “In the second run I took two much risk in the finish curve, until there it was a good run. But I will attack again in Romania. I have been second there twice, too, and it is about time…” His first and only world cup win is dated five years ago and he had to share it with Gerald Kammerlander (AUT). Since then he has been second five times and third six times. Very satisfied about his third place was Thomas Kammerlander (AUT) who made at least partly peace with Olang: “I came here with a really bad feeling as in 2011 I had a crash in the finish curve. It will never become my favorite track, but at least next time I will come back with a much better feeling.” The team event saw a close finish between Italy and Russia with a happier end for Italy. Evelin Lanthaler laid the basis with the fastest run time and Anton Blasbichler and Patrick Pigneter/Florian Clara stayed in the leading position and eventually won with a five hundredth of a second margin. Austria finished third with Michael Scheikl scoring the fastest run time. In the men’s Nations Cup Stefan Gruber (ITA) won ahead of Austria’s Florian Glatzl and Florian Clara (ITA).
