Seiser Alm/Alpe di Siusi (ck) - It was the 17-year-old Carmen Planötscher (ITA), who managed to do the unthinkable and broke Ekatharina Lavrentjeva’s winning streak after 13 consecutive wins. However, the one who actually eliminated her from the race was her Russian team mate Maria Kamarevtseva in the quarter final race. Kamarevtseva was defeated one round later by the eventual runner up Tina Unterberger. The happy winner was Carmen Planötscher who upset Michaela Niemetz (GER), Theresa Maurer (GER) and Liudmila Aksenenko (RUS) before she met Unterberger in the final run. Planötscher benefitted from Unterberger’s early start which was punished with the usual 1.5 second penalty, but had the nerves to secure her first world cup win. “I was really nervous, but somehow it worked nevertheless. I still cannot believe it”, said the student at Mals Sport School. In her only third start in a world cup event, she had very humble goals: “I only wanted to qualify for the world cup and improve my best result so far, an eighth place from Olang.” Tina Unterberger was a heartbeat away from her first win, but then started too early and had the 1.5 seconds penalty added to her run time. But she was still satisfied as she took the lead in the overall world cup after two seconds places this season. “I do not even remember when an Austrian has ever been at the top of the women’s world cup”, she said. She is one of the few who have been around at the last parallel race, but her recollection is not the best: “I crashed and broke my tailbone, but finished 8th in spite of it.” The third place claimed Liudmila Aksenenko (RUS). His third career world cup win celebrated Thomas Kammerlander (AUT) and so made Michael Scheikl (AUT) runner up the fourth consecutive time. “Of course I hoped that finally I would climb the top of the podium, but these second places are good for the overall ranking. In the final run I was totally relaxed, reaching the final took a burden off my heart”, said the new leader in the overall world cup, Scheikl. His opponent in the final run had made his way there after winning over Daniel Hofmann (SUI), Gregorii Bukin (RUS) and Marcus Grausam (GER) before he had to face local hero Patrick Pigneter (ITA) in the semifinal. “I have become stronger and stronger from run to run”, said Kammerlander. “After the duel with Patrick I was very relaxed.” Both athletes agree: “It was totally amazing to race here”, said Scheikl. “It is a totally different challenge and the large number of early starts shows that everybody pushes the limits and takes full risk.” With Florian Breitenberger (ITA) an experienced athletes made his comeback on the podium. 2008 had been his last podium finish. “It took me very long to recover from my injury”, he said. In 2009 he had suffered a fracture in his foot. “I participated in all parallel races in the past, maybe this experience has helped me today.” Final Results World Cup Women: 1.
