International Women's Day 2025: A historic step for women's luge

Podium Damen Doppel, Oberhof 2024

Berchtesgaden (FIL/07 Mrz 2025) On March 8, 2025, we will celebrate International Women's Day under the motto: “For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.” The focus is on an important milestone for equality in sport: the introduction of the women's doubles in luge at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina.

The Olympic Movement is committed to providing equal opportunities for women and girls worldwide in sport. The inclusion of the women's doubles luge will break down another barrier in winter sports and pave the way for more diversity and equality. After gender-equal participation at the Summer Games in Paris in 2024, this trend is now also continuing in winter sports.

Despite this progress, much remains to be done: women continue to be underrepresented in leadership positions in sports, and media attention for women's sports lags behind. Initiatives such as the International Olympic Committee's Portrayal Guidelines and programs such as “21 Steps to Gender Equality in Sport” are designed to raise awareness of these challenges and achieve concrete improvements.

The Milan-Cortina 2026 Games offer a historic opportunity to further advance equality in sport. With new competitions for women and a focus on inclusion and diversity, the message of International Women's Day 2025 will be strongly reinforced: #SportForAllWomenAndGirls.

We invite everyone to celebrate this progress, share their own stories and work together for a fairer future in sport.
