Cesana (pps) Two-time Olympic champion Armin Zoeggeler of Italy believes Russia's Albert Demchenko to be the hottest favourite to earn the gold medal in the men's singles at the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada (decision in the men's singles on February 13-14). “My favourite is Albert Demchenko. That's what I really think since the training week in Whistler. I was really surprised by his confidence and his constant performances. And this is quite different to the past years”, explained the 36-year old luger from South Tyrol. The interview in full length:
Who is your favourite for the Olympic title?
Armin Zoeggeler: “My favourite is Albert Demchenko. That's what I truly believe since the training week in Whistler. I was really surprised by Albert's confidence and his constant performances. That is quite different to the past years. Albert has prepared a new sled, with the centre of gravity more in the front and this serves for more stability. And the rather positive course of his season will further boost his mental security as well.”
Are there any other medal candidates?
Armin Zoeggeler: “Further medal candidates at the Olympic Games are Felix Loch and David Moeller of Germany. Felix is young and carefree, David has a lot of experience. Well, it will be difficult to beat any of them. And there there is, of course, Canada as the hosts – Sam Edney has had more runs in Whistler than any of us.”
But you make a very strong impression at the moment, too...
Armin Zoeggeler: “I feel good and I'm very happy with my fitness level. I've changed my athletics training a bit. And of course the better data also increase the motivation. The fact that the four Olympic luge runs will be carried out on two days – well this is something one has to adapt to. And it will be important to get a good night's sleep. But most of all I hope for regular weather conditions.”
