Germany, Russia and Latvia take gold at Junior World Championships

Degenhardt / Rosenthal first World Champions Women's doubles

Winterberg (FIL) Jessica Degenhardt (GER) secured two World Championship titles on 29 and 30 January 2022 in the VELTINS EisArena in Winterberg. Together with Cheyenne Rosenthal from Winterberg, the 19-year-old from Saxony made history as the first women's doubles World Champions.

The day before Degenhardt already became junior World Champion in the single seater in 1:29.117 minutes ahead of Sofiia Mazur from Russia (0.076 sec. behind) and team mate Merle Fräbel (+0.388).

Eduard Sevics-Mikelsevics/Lukass Krats from Latvia won the World Championship title in the double-seater of the male juniors in 1:35.987 minutes ahead of the young Austrians Juri Gatt/Ricardo Schöpf (+0.324) and the German duo Moritz Jäger/Valentin Steudte (+0.405).

Men's Doubles Junior Luge WCh 22

In the Team Relay, Germany won the Junior World Championship title ahead of the quartet from Russia and the team from Latvia.

Already on Friday, 28 January, 20-year-old Russian Matvei Perestoronin and the German women's double Luisa Romanenko / Pauline Patz were the first World champions of the 37th Junior Luge World Championships in the VELTINS Ice Arena in Winterberg. The male juniors kicked off the title competitions. With the fastest time in both runs, the young Russian secured gold in the end with a lead of about 47 hundredths of a second ahead of Florian Müller (WSC Erzgebirge Oberwiesenthal). The young German secured the silver medal with just eight thousandths ahead of the American Matthew Greiner.

Junior WCh 22 Team relay

In the junior women's doubles, the German duo Luisa Romanenko / Pauline Patz from Schmalkalden finished on top. After two runs they were 49 thousandths ahead of Latvia's Marta Robezniece / Kitija Bogdanova. Third place went to the second Latvian double Viktorija Ziedina and Selina Zvilna. "It is exciting to be World Champions. This is our first world championship. It feels good," said the newly crowned world champions, who also won the overall World Cup.

Within the Junior World Championships, the winners of the 11th Junior Americas Pacific Championship were also contested. Here, Caitlin Nash (CAN) secured the title in the junior women's single, as well as the USA's Matthew Greiner in the singles and the doubles of Maya Chan/Reannyn Weiler in the women's and Marcus Mueller/Ansel Haugsjaa in the men's doubles.

Women's Doubles, USA Luge

The historic women's doubles world championship is expected to be the first official step towards the discipline's inclusion in the 2026 Olympic calendar. It is also the last international luge event before the 2022 Winter Olympics, which begin on 4 February 2022.
