Junior and 1st Women's Doubles World Championships in VELTINS Ice Arena Winterberg

Merle Fräbel

Winterberg (FIL/pst) Shortly before the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing in 2022, the junior lugers and women's doubles will start their season's highlight in Winterberg.

On 28 and 29 January 2022, the world's elite of young lugers will compete for titles and podium places in the singles and doubles events at the VELTINS Ice Arena. The competitions will be rounded off by the first World Championships in women's doubles on Sunday, 30 January from 10 am.
Before the sporting events in the VELTINS Ice Arena, a virtual World Championship opening ceremony will take place on Thursday, 27 January, from 5 pm. This will be streamed on YouTube on the rink's channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojvsX_DzGS8

Noah Kallan

The first competition will be contested by the male juniors on Friday morning from 10 am. Here, BSD lugers such as the winner of the Junior World Cup Timon Grancagnolo (ESV Lok Chemnitz) or the third of this ranking Pascal Kunze (ESV Lok Zwickau) are among the favourites. Just like in the "big ones", the lugers from Austria are also among the favourites. Here, for example, 17-year-old Noah Kallan, who reached second place in the overall World Cup thanks to numerous podium finishes, was convincing.

In the junior women's event, Merle Fräbel (RT Suhl) and Jessica Degenhardt (RRC Altenberg) are two of the hottest German contenders for gold. Fräbel won the overall World Cup ahead of Degenhardt, who has already been at the top of the podium twice at a junior World Cup (YWC). Besides these two, the competition from Russia is likely to be among the front runners. Sofia Mazur, for example, won the first two World Cups in La Plagne and was always on the podium except

for the final in Bludenz.

Degenhardt / Rosenthal

In the doubles competitions, the BSD sleds are also among the top favourites.

World Championship premiere of the women's doubles on Sunday in Winterberg

A historic medal ceremony will take place on Sunday, when two women will be crowned World Champions in the doubles for the first time. The duo Degenhardt/Rosenthal has very good chances. Both are among the German top in the singles and have teamed up for the first time this season in the women's doubles. Jessica Degenhardt could already win historic gold in this new discipline with partner Vanessa Schneider at the Youth Olympic Games 2020 in Switzerland. Cheyenne Rosenthal from BSC Winterberg, for example, completed the last two individual World Cups and convinced with a fifth place in Oberhof. In doubles, the duo won all World Cup races in which they participated.
