Koenigssee will be the World Championship venue for the 7th time / Start with Sprint World Championships

Berchtesgaden (FIL): For three days, the 2021 FIL Luge World Championships will be held at the foot of Watzmann mountain, on the world's first artificial track for luge, bobsleigh and skeleton. These world title competitions will be held for the 50th time. The anniversary World Championships at Koenigssee will start on Tuesday, 26th January 2021 with the training runs. On Friday, 29th January, the Sprint World Champions will be determined in one run each at the start of the competition.  
The Sprint World Cup has been in existence since the 2014/2015 season. This new discipline celebrated its World Championship premiere in the year 2016 in Königssee. The first Sprint World Champions iwere Switzerland's Martina Kocher and the German athletes Felix Loch in Singles and Tobias Wendl / Tobias Arlt in Doubles. In the sprint, there will be only one run each in the men's, women's and doubles' events and only the best 15 athletes and doubles from the qualification run at Friday 9 a.m. will be admitted to the final sprint heat on Friday afternoon. 

BMW Sprint World Cup 2021, Men

After a flying start, the timing will start at the earliest 100 metres after the start bars under an arch. This start arch is marked with a flashing light. The traffic light flashes green when the sled passes through the arch and thus triggers the time measurement. The finish light barrier is located at the end of the track, analogous to the classic races. 

Virtual World Championship Opening Ceremony
For the first time in the 64-year long history of the International Luge Federation, FIL, there will be a virtual World Championships’ Opening Ceremony. The World Championships will be officially opened on Thursday, January 28, at 6.30 p.m. (CET) on the regional Television of Upper Bavaria (RFO) and via livestream on BSD-TV. In addition to the talks with World Championships’ favourites, the virtual "parade of the nations" and various video inserts, the new elected FIL President Einars Fogelis from Latvia, will officially open the 50th FIL World Championships.
