Demchenko, Huefner and Oberstolz-Gruber the winners Sigulda (pps) Three medals for Germany’s lugers, two for Italy and Austria each as well as one medal for Russia and the Ukraine – five national federations took podium finishes at the last World Cup event in Sigulda in December 2008. In the women’s singles Natalia Yakushenko, who has ended her active career in the meantime, took second place. For many years she was one of the biggest adversaries of Germany’s women lugers. Tatjana Huefner claimed the top spot on the podium, team-mate Anke Wischnewski finished in third position. In the men’s singles Russia’s Albert Demchenko celebrated his only World Cup success in the 2008-2009 season, defeating Armin Zoeggeler of Italy and Germany’s David Moeller to second and third place. Italy then claimed the gold medal in the doubles’ with the team of Christian Oberstolz-Patrick Gruber, ahead of Austria with Wolfgang and Andreas Linger and their compatriots Peter Penz-Georg Fischler, who celebrated the first World Cup podium finish of their career in Sigulda.
