Luge family mourns Hans Plenk

Hans Plenk

Berchtesgaden (FIL/12 Sept 2023) The FIL family mourns the death of one of the most successful German luge athletes of the 1960s, bronze medallist at the first Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck in 1964 and World Champion in Davos (SUI) in 1965. On the night of September 10-11, 2023, Hans Plenk passed away peacefully at his home in Schönau am Königssee.

The 85-year-old had fond memories of carrying the German flag at the opening ceremony of the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble.

Even after the end of his career, the native of Berchtesgaden continued to give back to the sport. For 22 years, Hans Plenk successfully led the Berchtesgaden Luge Club (RCB) as its first board member, was a judge at all World Cups in Koenigssee, at the Junior World Cups and at many international and national competitions and was also involved in the Bavarian Bobsleigh and Luge Sports Association (BBSV) as its president and now as an honorary member.

The great promoter of the sport of luge was particularly looking forward to the 100th anniversary of his club RCB, which will unfortunately have to take place without him next Saturday, September 16, 2023, in the Eisarena Königssee.
