Madeleine Egle finds the right line in the Altenberg ice track

Altenberg (FIL) The German women were as strong as usual in their home race at the EBERSPÄCHER Luge World Cup in Altenberg. But Madeleine Egle defied them and claimed her second World Cup victory.

Twice the 23-year-old Austrian set the fastest time in the 1220-metre-long ice track. Her total time: 1:45.208 minutes.

World Champion Julia Taubitz (Germany) came in second, 0.293 seconds behind, ahead of her team-mates Anna Berreiter (0.585 sec. back) and Olympic Champion Natalie Geisenberger (0.761). Emily Sweeney, who had to take a break from the two Sochi races, showed rising form. The US-American was 0.833 seconds slower than winner Egle in fifth place.

"I congratulate Madeleine and give her my heartfelt best wishes for the victory, she deserved it because she was the better luger," said Taubitz about the performance of her friend Madeleine Egle. She herself had made mistakes in both runs on her home track. The 1.84 metre tall Austrian had not yet found the optimal line in the final training. The fact that she was then able to improve in the race made her particularly happy and proud. Otherwise she said about her two runs: "The basis is basically the start, but it's also working better and better with the driving." Two victories in the Olympic winter also boost self-confidence.
