Calgary (pps/November 17, 2009) Actually, Canada would be something of a blind spot with regard to luge medal winners at Olympic Games or World Championships – if it were not for Miroslav Zajonc. The now 49-year old captured the gold medal in the men’s singles at the 1983 World Championships in Lake Placid, USA. At that time he competed for Canada.
Miroslav Zajonc has his roots in former Czechoslovakia. In 1981, the then 21-year old emigrated to the USA. Two years later he competed for Canada at the World Championships in Lake Placid – and sensationally earned the title. He then again changed nationality, competing for the USA. Four weeks prior to the 1988 Olympic Games he broke his right leg but still qualified for Calgary together with his partner Tim Nardiello. At the “Canada Olympic park” the doubles’ team finished on fourth place.
Today, Miroslav Zajonc is working as a coach with the US team.
