Zirndorf (pps) The most successful female luge athlete of all times has become a mother. Sylke Otto, who first resigned from active sport in January 2007, gave birth to daughter Sina on May 29th, 2007 in Zirndorf near Nuremberg. The newborn measured 54 centimetres and weighed 3680 grams at birth. Daughter and mother are in good health, as confirmed by companion and father Ronald Grund. “Sina is a miracle for me. She is the most important, my most beautiful victory” explained the 37-year-old in an interview at the beginning of May.

With two Olympic victories, four World Championships titles, four overall victories of the Viessmann World Cups as well as the winner of a record number of 37 Viessmann World Cups, Sylke Otto is the most successful female luge athlete of all times.

The athlete, who would have started for Oberwiesenthal in Oberhof, had announced her retirement on January 12, 2007. The deciding factor was a crash of Russian Albert Demtschenko right in front of her eyes. “The health of my baby has now priority” said Sylke Otto justifying her retirement.
