Nations Cup victories for Anna Berreiter, Chris Eissler and Geueke / Gamm in Königssee

Nationscup Doubles Königssee 2021

Koenigssee (FIL): Three German victories marked the start of 2021 at the FIL Nations Cup of luge at Koenigssee, Bavaria. Robin Geueke / David Gamm, Chris Eissler and Anna Berreiter each won their races on Friday, January 1st 2021.

In the Lotto Bayern Eisarena Königssee, Germany's Robin Geueke and David Gamm won sovereignly in  the doubles race in 50.339 seconds. The second-placed Russian duo Vsevolod Kashkin and Konstantin Korshunov were already 42 hundredths of a second behind the winners from Winterberg. For Geueke / Gamm, who did not qualify for the World Cup at the start of the season, it will be the first World Cup start of the winter in Koenigssee. Robin Geueke was happy about the victory: "It has always hurt to have watched the World Cup, and it’s much better now that we can be there again."
Third place went to the team from the USA with Chris Mazdzer and Jayson Terdiman (+0.771). The athletes from the USA will compete in the EBERSPÄCHER Luge World Cup for the first time this season in Koenigssee. They spent the first half of the season in Lake Placid (USA) for training and internal qualification races due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

In the men's race, Chris Eissler from Saxony was the fastest in 49.490 seconds. Exactly two thousandths of a second behind him came the only 18-year-old Russian Pavel Repilov in second place. Repilov, whose brother Roman was World Champion in Sochi in 2020, will make his World Cup debut on Saturday, January 2. Jonathan Gustafson (+0.025), 23, of the United States, finished bronze in his international season debut.

The women's race was won by 21-year-old Anna Berreiter from Bischofswiesen on her home track in 50.744 seconds ahead of Russia's Viktoriia Demchenko (+0.128) and US-American Summer Britcher (+0.143). Summer Britcher was happy: "I am so happy to be back in the World Cup. The track at Königssee is in perfect condition and it's great fun to race here."

Athletes qualify for the EBERSPÄCHER World Cup on Saturday and Sunday via the Nations Cup, which is run in one heat. The fastest twelve female athletes and doubles as well as the fastest 15 men of the last three World Cup races are seeded and do not have to go to the Nations Cup for qualification. For them, there will be the seeded training on Friday, January 1st from 2:30 p.m. (CET) as the last run before the World Cup at the foot of the Watzmann.
