Vancouver will carry out blood doping controls for the first time in luge

Liberec (pps) Luge has remained a clean sport in the pre-Olympic season. As announced by the International Luge Federation, FIL, no doping offences occurred at either FIL Championships or Viessmann World Cup events. “Despite numerous random doping controls by the International Anti-Doping Agency, WADA, in national and competition anti-doping controls or controls by the international federation itself, no international luge athlete was tested positive”, reported FIL President Josef Fendt during the 57th FIL Congress in Liberec, Czech Republic.

As the FIL President further explained, blood doping controls will be carried out for the first time in the sport of luge at the XXI Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver (February 12-28). “I hope that after the Games we will continue to refer to the sport of luge as a clean sport.”

The last two doping cases within the FIL were due to cannabis abuse. Both athletes were punished by their national federations.
