Oberhof (pps) For two years now the International Luge Federation, FIL, has been trying new roads to make its sport more attractive for spectators and the media. Last year, the training runs have been limited and a qualification was introduced in the World Cup, and the team event was upgraded. The latest innovation is the so-called “traffic light start” which will be inaugurated at the team event at Oberhof, Germany. The procedure of the traffic light start was fixed by the FIL Sports Commission as follows: 1. The light is red 2. An acoustic signal is given, for one second the green light shows, then the red light is again switched on. That is the sign for the athletes that they can start. 3. The athletes then have 20 seconds to prepare, but the time is not shown. Within that 20 seconds the athletes must close their visors and prepare for the start. 4. A maximum of five seconds follow. Within that time the green light shows – selected by random generator. 5. A false start happens when the athlete leaves the bar before the green light shows. The consequence is disqualification.
