Olympic Champion Felix Loch makes a strong case for school sport

Berchtesgaden (FIL/13 Oct, 2022) As part of the campaign "Education needs exercise! No renunciation of sport at school" campaign of the DOSB (German Olympic Sports Federation) and the DSj (German Sports Youth), three-time Olympic Champion Felix Loch organised school sport lessons at the primary school in Berchtesgaden together with his coaches Olympic Champion Patric Leitner and former World Champion Kristina Baader.
Felix Loch emphasised: "Sport is incredibly important. The children had to cut back the most during the Corona pandemic and now we should show them the fun of sport again. We succeeded quite well in our sports lessons. You could see how much fun the kids had. If we can get some kids back into sport and exercise as a result, then the project has already been worthwhile."

The DOSB position paper states, among other things: "In times of the Corona pandemic, it is a special challenge to organise sports for children and young people under changed hygiene rules adapted to the current situation - also in schools. For many weeks, there were no school lessons and thus no sports lessons throughout Germany due to the Corona pandemic. But that is only part of the problem. The Corona crisis has led to a lack not only of physical exercise, but also of social contacts and personal interactions. The lack of movement, encounter and participation is still part of everyday life for many young people at the moment and reinforces the already existing movement crisis among children and young people. At present, it is not yet possible to see how (school) everyday life can be made possible under the given conditions. In addition to the re-entry into club-based sporting activities, school sport must also take place again and be recognised for its importance in promoting physical activity and health. Sports halls should also be used primarily for games, sports and exercise in accordance with their intended purpose.

We demand that viable ways be sought to enable a moving school day that includes the subject of physical education and school sport. The German Sports Youth expressly offers its cooperation for this."
