Olympic Champion Scheidel celebrated 75th birthday

Illmenau /RWH) Wolfgang Scheidel, 1972 Olympic Champion in men’s single in Sapporo (JPN), has celebrated his 75th birthday on March 9, 2018. Scheidel, who was born in lllmenau, became the first Olympic Champion of Thuringia. In 1965 he won gold at the Luge World Championships in Davos (SUI) in doubles together with Michael Köhler.

In his whole life Scheidel has been closely connected to the world of Luge. He worked as a youth coach and competed many times at the veteran's race in Oberhof. With great interest he watched the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang on TV. “I was fascinated by the coverage”, Scheidel was quoted by the local newspaper “Thüringer Allgemeine”.
