Berchtesgaden (FIL/01 May 2025) The International Luge Federation (FIL) is delighted to welcome four-time Olympic participant and two-time medalist Alex Gough from Canada as a new member of the FIL Track Construction Commission.

Gough, who has impressed both with her sporting career and her training as an engineer, brings valuable experience and expertise to the technical work of the commission.

Claire delNegro, FIL Vice President Sport said: "I am very pleased that Alex has joined the FIL in several capacities - most recently being part of the pre-homologation team for the newly constructed Cortina track.  The combination of her experience as a successful luge athlete, her time with the FIL Sports Commission, and her professional engineering skills have made her a valuable contributor to the FIL. Having Alex as part of our team shows our continuing commitment to promoting women in our International Federation and I hope this helps to inspire future generations in our sport."

The chairman of the Track Construction Commission, Markus Aschauer, is delighted to have Gough on board: “Alex Gough is a very thoughtful and competent person with a solid technical background. Her contributions during the pre-homologation of the new Olympic track in Cortina were extremely productive and of great value. She has a good feel for the requirements of the athletes, while also contributing innovative ideas and technical expertise – an ideal combination for our work.”

Gough, who ended her active career after the 2018 Olympic Games, won bronze in the women's singles and silver in the team relay with her teammates Sam Edney, Tristan Walker, and Justin Snith. She has remained closely involved with the sport of luge since retiring, and in 2021 she was appointed acting president of Luge Canada after Steve Harris stepped down to take up the position of high performance manager. She is supported by Kim McRae, also a successful Canadian luger, who was elected to the board as athlete representative.

“It has always been important to me to give something back to the Sport of Luge,” said Gough. ”It is a great honor to now be able to contribute to the development of future luge tracks at the international level. I look forward to bringing my experience as an athlete and my technical knowledge as an engineer to the table.”

With the appointment of Alex Gough, the FIL is sending a strong signal for the greater involvement of former top athletes in the development of the sport – not only on the ice, but also in strategic and technical committees.
