Organisers prepare for the new 2026/2027 season

Joint World Championships with track luge in Innsbruck/Igls to be the highlight

The countdown to the new Alpine Luge season is under way. On Sunday, 18 October 2026, the organisers of the FIL World Cup and Junior World Cup venues met for a joint meeting at the new finish building of the ice channel in Innsbruck/Igls.

Igls (FIL/19 October 2026) The choice of venue was no coincidence, as Igls (AUT) will host the first joint World Championships for track luge and Alpine Luge. In February 2027, the new world champions in luge will be crowned at the foot of the Patscherkofel.

Following a welcome by FIL Vice-President for Alpine Luge Simon Paregger, FIL Sports Director for Alpine Luge Andreas Castiglioni presented the duties and guidelines for organisers of FIL Alpine Luge competitions. These cover, among other things, technical requirements, the running of medal ceremonies and advertising regulations. The issue of financial support for races from the International Luge Federation prompted lively discussion. “Due to cost-cutting measures and increasingly tight budgets, belts are being tightened across all areas, and organisers will have to rely more heavily on self-financing,” Castiglioni stressed. He was also able to welcome two “newcomers” to the meeting. After a ten-year absence, Latsch/Laces (ITA) is returning to the FIL World Cup, while Ried (AUT) will host a FIL event for the first time with a Junior World Cup round.

Helmut Ruetz, Secretary General of Rodel Austria, subsequently presented the 2027 Luge World Championships in Igls and provided an update on progress with construction of the new “Heiligwasser” Alpine Luge track, which will be used as a recreational luge run after the championships. The organisers’ meeting concluded with an inspection of the starting area of the luge track at the “Teehüttn”.
