Bolzano (pma) – He is seven-time World Champion, six-time European Champion, fifteen times Overall World Cup Winner, has scored 65 World Cup Wins in Single and Doubles, beside his partner Florian Clara. South-Tyrolean Patrick Pigneter is the undisputed number one in luge on natural track. What are your personal aims this season? Patrick Pigneter: I want to defend my titles. It would be a great story, if I can score three Gold Medals again, like at the last World Championships. There are only a few athletes who are successful in Singles and Doubles. How much stress is a double-header at a World Cup weekend. PP: Quite stressful. Most of the athletes have specialized at one discipline. Florian Clara and myself are at the moment the only athletes who can score a top three finish in both disciplines. We are training hard in summer to be competitive in winter. It is a true mental challenge, but there is one advantage. If we visit a new course we have more training runs and we become more familiar with the track. Season kick-off with a parallel race. A competition which you like? PP: I’m one of the best at difficult and challenging courses. Parallel races are shorter than the classic ones. They are a welcome change in our calender. The competition helps to increase the attention of our sport. I’m looking forward to the race at Kühtai. Who are your biggest opponents this season? PP: I’m the hunted and everybody wants to defeat me. Austrians Kammerlander, Scheikl and Schopf are my biggest opponents at the Single races. My Italian teammates and the Russian athletes can also score some surprising results. At the doubles competition it will be a fight between Florian Clara and me and the Russian Egorov/Popov and Porschnev/Lazarev. World Championships are held in Sankt Sebastian, Austria. A place where you have a lot of memories? PP: I had a lot of great moments but also a terrible crash back in 2009. The track is fast and very challenging. I like the track and I want to score three Gold Medals there. Is there a favourite race in 2014/15? PP: Deutschnofen, a race on home soil form me. The competitions are organized perfectly and I always will remember the World Championships in 2013. To win three Gold medals was a special moment.
