World Champions Wendl-Arlt: Seventh victory in ninth race

Sochi (pps) Germany’s doubles team with Tobias Wendl-Tobias Arlt has dominated the Viessmann Luge World Cup in the pre-Olympic season. Taking the podium’s top spot at the final of the World Cup series in Sochi (Russia), the current World Champions celebrated their seventh victory in the ninth event. With a winning margin of 199 points they clearly earned their second overall World Cup victory and the “Joska” crystal trophy after 2010-2011.

Behind Wendl-Arlt, who claimed their first World Championship title at the Worlds in Whistler (Canada) at the beginning of February and now posted their 17th individual victory at the Olympic test at the “Sliding Center Sanki”, former European Champions Peter Penz-Georg Fischler of Austria finished in second position. Olympic silver medalists Andris Sics-Juris Sics of Latvia claimed the third place. Canadians Tristan Walker-Justin Snith, who took the fourth place in front of a home crowd at the World Cup in Lake Placid, posted a fourth-place finish again.

Behind Wendl-Arlt, who prematurely won the overall Viessmann Luge World Cup already two weeks ago, teammates Toni Eggert-Sascha Benecken and Penz-Fischler of Austria claimed the second and third place, respectively.

Quotes

Tobias Arlt (GER / 2013 World Champion, 2008 World silver medalist, 2010-2011 overall World Cup winner)

“We were highly motivated even though we’ve already won the overall World Cup. After all, this is the future Olympic luge track. We wanted to test our material in order to improve our driving line and the sled.”

Georg Fischler (AUT / 2011 European Champion, 2011 World bronze medalist)

“We’ve had a very good season. With the exception of two races we’ve always achieved podium finishes. Keeping the 2014 Olympic Games in mind, today’s race was especially important. I’m sure that we’ll see exciting races next year – with a close result.”

Andris Sics (LAT / 2010 Olympic silver medalist) The track is very good and has passed its test for the Olympic Games. Despite the rain the conditions were fair for all of us.”
