Pigneter aims for eleventh Overall World Cup in a row
Umhausen (PMA) - The Grantau track is 955 metres long and has twelve corners. It is the place for the Overall World Cup showdown on natural track. As last year Umhausen is the host of the World Cup Finals. Two of three decisions at the overall classement are taken. A final nightrace is waiting to decide who wins the men's title this year. All competition runs are scheduled on Saturday. The Grantau is a difficult track and the local athletes are always in the mood to surprise.
At the men's classement Patrick Pigneter from Italy is leading with 46 points ahead of his team mate Alex Gruber. If Gruber wins, Pigneter needs a sixth place minimum to secure his Overall World Cup win. It can be his eleventh in a row. Austrian local hero and new European Champion Thomas Kammerlander is 96 points behind Pigneter and has chances in term of figures.
Evelin Lanthaler (ITA) secured her Overall World Cup win at the penultimate race in Deutschnofen. She ended a ten-year-long dominance by Russian Ekaterina Lavrentyeva. There is still much excitement at the ladies event. Three athletes are battling for the second place. Tina Unterberger (AUT) holds this position with 365 points at the moment. Lavrentyeva is on third place with 360 points. Greta Pinggera from Italy is only five points behind the Russian.
Also at the Doubles event the Overall World Cup has been awarded yet. Patrick Pigneter and Florian Clara won five out of five races and crowned themselves at Deutschnofen, for the fourth time in a row. Behind the Italian duo three pairings are battling for the second place. Austrian Regensburger/Holzknecht and Brüggler/Angerer want to finish ahead of Russian Egorov/Popov in front of their home crowd. Regensburger and Holzknecht are members of the host club at Umhausen.
