With the fastest times in both runs Reinhard Beer and Herbert Kögl (AUT) made everything clear, won the race and the Overall World Cup for the second time in their career. “It was even more difficult back then”, Kögl said, “we were newcomers and the setting of the sled was quite a challenge for us. Now we have got all these years of experience and routine. In this winter we became Austrian Champions, World Champions with the team and now we have won the World Cup, that´s more than reached the goal.” They think that the secret of the success was the permanent dealing with the material. “Last year we saw that we are fast, that we have a great sled and we were satisfied with that. After a while all the others had caught up with us. This year we never stopped working. From race to race we improved little details and we also took a higher risk in racing,” Kögl explained. Runner up and third became the same in the Olang race as well as in the World Cup final ranking. Andrzej Laszczak/Damian Waniczek (POL) finished second ahead of Pawel Porschnev/Ivan Lazarev.
A new face – and probably one to remember – was seen in Olang: After Harald Kleinhofer (AUT) had retired during the season, his long time partner Gerhard Mühlbacher was left alone and forced to look for a new partner. He did not waste much time and found 29-year-old Christian Schatz. They won their first race in the European Cup and impressed with fastest training times in the Olang trainings. In the race they finally had to settle for the 5th rank. “We had a major mistake in the first run and I guess we were a bit nervous before our first World Cup race,” said Schatz.

In the women´s event Renate Gietl (ITA) already came to Olang as the new World Cup Champion. After her four wins at the beginning of the season two fourth places in Latzfons and Olang were easily enough for the overall triumph. “I knew I would not win at the end of the season because I do not like these flat and slow tracks. I was lucky that I was far ahead already”, said Renate Gietl. “Winning the World Cup has been a dream, but I guess this is every athlete´s dream.” Back on the winning track is Ekatherina Lavrentjeva (RUS) who after having been successful in Latzfons and the Latsch World Championships celebrated her third victory in a row. Renate Kasslatter (ITA) had been in the lead after the first run, but due to a bad start in the second run she missed the top spot. “This is my best season result, so I don´t complain. I am glad that I am back on the podium”, she said. She went a full circle as it was here in Olang where she had her international break through last season.
