Only one female athlete ever managed to win five consecutive races within one season in the thirteen-year-long history of the World Cup on natural track. It was Irene Zechner from Austria in the winter of 1995/96. She won five out of six races and so far her record has not been reached even though three more girls managed to win four times in a row. Elvira Holzknecht (AUT) did so in 1994/95 (plus she won the first race in the next season which would sum up to five as well), Sonja Steinacher in 2001/02, Irene Zechner herself in 1993/94 and 1995/96. And now the 23-year-old Italian Renate Gietl joined the club. More than this, the coming weekend she has got the chance to leave Holzknecht and Steinacher behind.
Different from her, her male colleague Anton Blasbichler does not have to share the spot at the very top of the record holders any more. Should he win again in Lazfons, he will only improve his own record of four consecutive win. No one ever managed to win five.
Lazfons will host a RED BULL World Cup race for the very first time, but they do have a history in natural track luge racing. Two times World Champion and four times winner of the Overall World Cup Sonja Steinacher has her roots in Lazfons as well as Franz Obrist, winner of the very first Overall World Cup in 1992/93 or Reinhard Gruber, World as well as European Champion.
For the first time in this winter a part of the event will be held as a night event. Both men´s singles runs will take place under flood light whereas the women´s and doubleseater´s events will be daylight races.
