Robert Fegg new head coach of the US Team

Robert Fegg

Lake Placid (RWH) Robert Fegg is the new head coach of the US national luge team. The two-time World junior champion from Germany, who most recently coached the US national luge team's junior selection, replaced Bill Tavares, who voluntarily retired to the second row, but with his experience will remain with the team. The US Luge Association (USLA) has now announced these personnel decisions in Lake Placid, New York.

Fegg, 42 years old, born in Berchtesgaden and now at home in Calgary (CAN), was fourth in men’s single and second with the German team at the 1999 World Championships on his home track in Königssee. Prior to his US engagement, Fegg worked in Canada and since 2014, together with Steffen Sartor, has led the Korean team to the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang. There, naturalized Aileen Frisch finished eighth, the Korean doubles and the Team Relay were each ranked ninth.

Bill Tavares looks back on an extraordinary coaching career in bobsleigh and luge. At all Olympic Winter Games since 2002 the athletes he has coached won medals. In Salt Lake City Jill Bakken/Vonetta Flowers won gold in women's bobsleigh, in Turin Shauna Rohbock/Valerie Flemming were awarded silver, in Vancouver bronze for Erin Pac/Elana Meyers. The luge athletes, who were coached by the 1992 Olympic participant (ninth in the doubles with Wendell Suckow), won two medals in Sochi and PyeongChang thanks to Erin Hamlin (2014 / bronze) and Chris Mazdzer (2018 / silver).

Pat Anderson was appointed as Fegg's successor as junior coach. He is supported by the Latvian Kaspars Dumpis.
