Oberhof (RWH) Although all of the titles in the individual races at the Junior European Championships organised by the International Luge Federation (FIL) in Oberhof have gone to host Germany, Russia’s up-and-coming lugers won the team sprint event. The Russian quartet comprising Victoria Demchenko, Roman Repilov and Evgeny Evdokimov–Alexei Groshev relegated the Latvian team of Kendija Aparjode, Kristers Aparjods and doubles duo Kristens Putins–Karlis Matuzels to second. Austria’s juniors Nina Prock, Nico Gleirscher and David Trojer–Philipp Knoll were third. Jessica Tiebel of Germany won the title of Junior European Champion in the women’s singles just one week after collecting gold in the Junior World Championships in Lillehammer (NOR). Second place, again in a repeat of the previous week’s performance, was taken by Russia’s Victoria Demchenko, daughter of three-times Olympic silver medallist Albert Demchenko. Saskia Langer of Germany was third. In the men’s event, Sebastian Bley of Germany came first ahead of Russia’s Junior World Champion Roman Repilov. The bronze medal went to Nico Gleirscher of Austria. Gold in the doubles was taken by Lillehammer victors Florian Löffler and Manuel Stiebing of Germany, with silver for the Latvians Kristens Putins and Karlis Matuzels and bronze for the team of Evgeny Evdokimov and Alexei Groshev.
