Yanking /China (RWH) Shortly after the election of Beijing to host the XXIV Olympic Winter Games, the first preparations have begun in the sport of luge. Liechtenstein’s Wolfgang Schädler, the sports coordinator for China, held the first luge camp in Yanking from 17 to 23 August, and at the end of the camp nominated the members of China’s first national team. The future Olympic luge, bobsleigh & skeleton track is to be built in Yanking, which lies around 90 kilometres from the Chinese capital, by the year 2022. Beijing was elected over Almaty (Kazakhstan) by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to host the 2022 Olympic Winter Games. Wolfgang Schädler, who coached the US team for over 20 years and then worked as a coach in Russia, has been sports coordinator for China since early summer 2015. A total of 120 athletes aged between 14 and 17 years from provinces across China and 22 different sports took part in the first luge selections. A variety of media including seven television stations reported on the first Chinese luge activities.
