Innsbruck-Igls (RWH) The Viessmann World Cup is going into its 38th winter on historic ground. The artificial track in Innsbruck-Igls, which was constructed on exactly the same spot at the foot of the Patscherkofel Mountain as the natural track on which luge made its first Olympic appearance in 1964, will be hosting a Viessmann World Cup for the 33rd time. Only Königssee, the world’s oldest artificial track, has hosted the luge more frequently, with 34 events since the World Cup made its debut in the winter of 1977-1978. In addition to this, Innsbruck has already hosted three Olympic Games: the Olympic Winter Games were held in the capital of Tyrol on the original natural track in 1964, and in 1976 on the artificial track later erected on the same site. In 2012, Innsbruck was then home to the very first Youth Olympic Games (YOG). The Igls labyrinth has also hosted the World Championships organized by the International Luge Federation (FIL) four times, in 1977, 1987, 1997 and 2007The FIL family is already looking forward to the next championships to be held here in two years’ time.
