Seven victories in a row: Felix Loch on record chase

Ceremony Men Oberhof #2 2021

Oberhof (FIL): Felix Loch doesn't leave anything to be desired at the EBERSPÄCHER World Cup this season. In Oberhof, the 31-year-old once again demonstrated his current dominance. In the first run he achieved a record start in 7,126 seconds as well as a track record in 42,673 seconds. "Especially the record start is awesome, but also the track record," cheered the German, "it's fun when you can go that fast." As an aside, the three-time Olympic champion set another record with seven wins in a row in the singles. Before that, Italy's Armin Zoeggeler and Markus Prock (Austria) were successful six times in a row across the season.

What is the competition doing? "At the moment he is playing with us," said the Tyrolean David Gleirscher almost resignedly. The Olympic champion had finished third behind his teammate Jonas Müller. Müller's gap to winner Loch: a remarkable 0.247 seconds. Nevertheless, the Austrian was satisfied: "Oberhof is fun for me, there it goes back and forth." Gleirscher was already 0.443 seconds slower. Fourth on his home track was Johannes Ludwig from Suhl, who had finished second at the first stop of the lugers in Thuringia. Surprisingly, he admitted: "Basically, I have to admit that I have problems with the start in Oberhof. It doesn't suit me one hundred percent." Ludwig is considered one of the most explosive starters.

After a few small mistakes in the second run, the 21-year-old Max Langenhan had fallen back from third place after the first run to fifth place. "Two tenths were already in it - that would have been the podium," said the Thuringian, who inflicted Felix Loch's only defeat this season in the sprint in Winterberg. Because Langenhan is ranked behind Ludwig, Felix Loch cannot yet celebrate his seventh overall World Cup win. He has 855 points with three World Cup races left, Ludwig 565. Given this lead, Loch joked, "I should win the overall World Cup now after all. After all, I'm already getting a few points just by competing." But that is not the claim of the 47-time World Cup winner: "I want to continue to race at the top."
