Sics brothers - with experience to triumph in Sochi

Sochi (FIL) Andris and Juris Sics won the first doubles competition of the EBERSPÄCHER Luge World Cup in Sochi.
On their way to their fifth World Cup victory, the two Latvians managed two evenly good runs. Thus they were able to relegate Andri Bogdanov and Iurii Prokhorov to second place by 0.120 seconds. The two Russians had qualified for the World Cup race via the Nations Cup. And they made the most of their home advantage with the fastest run (49.660 sec.) in the first run.
Third place went to the two German Olympic champions Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt (0.229 seconds behind). They were followed by Toni Eggert/Sascha Benecken (Germany), the winners of the opening race in Yanqing (China), with a gap of five thousandths of a second.

The Sics brothers and the two "Tobis" together on the podium in Sochi. This immediately brings back memories of the 2014 Olympic Games. At that time, however, Wendl/Arlt were at the top, the Sics brothers next to them in third place. "We like the track," said front man Andris Sics, "we were here before in autumn and tried out new sleds and a new setup. That was an important experience." Because between the opening weekend in Yangqing and Sochi there were not many opportunities for training. "We only had five runs before the race," Juris Sics told us after the race, "but we are in good shape." They want to maintain or even improve this until next weekend, when the second event will take place in the 1384-metre ice track of the Sliding Centre Sanki.
