Berlin (pps) Sigulda, Latvia, will host the 45th World Championships of the International Luge Federation (FIL) in 2015. This decision was taken during the 59th FIL Congress in Berlin. The 2014 FIL Junior World Championships were awarded to Innsbruck-Igls (AUT). As for the division natural track, Deutschnofen (ITA) was awarded the 19th FIL World Championships 2013; Sochi/Krasnaya Polyana (RUS) won the bid for hosting the 20th FIL World Championships on natural track in 2015. The artificially refrigerated track in Sigulda, according to official reports opened in 1986, will thus host World Championships for the second time after 2003. Even though the 1991 Worlds had been allocated to Sigulda with its 1,200m long track that features 16 curves, the organisers had to back down after riots and civil commotions in Latvia. This is why Winterberg in Germany then stepped into the breach at short notice. Upon application by the Executive Board the decision as to the eventual host of the 2014 European Championships was postponed to next year.
