World Championships fifth-placer Julia Clukey undergoes knee surgery

Lake Placid (pps) Six weeks before the first Viessmann World Cup in Calgary, Canada, scheduled for November 20/21, USA’s Julia Clukey, fifth-placer at the 2009 luge World Championships, underwent surgery on her right knee. The winner of the start competition in Meransen, Italy, is hoping that she will be able to begin training on ice in two weeks, one week later than her teammates. According to her doctors, her participation in the Calgary Viessmann World Cup is not at risk.

The arthroscopic surgery was performed by US team doctor Dr. Eugene Byrne at Adirondak Medical Center in Saranc Lake on September 28. Clukey injured her knee while wheel training on the luge track in Lake Placid after crashing out of curve 14. She initially planned to postpone surgery until the end of the Olympic luge season, but then decided to follow her doctor’s advice.
