Sochi (pps) Swiss luger Gregory Carigiet will start at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, with a track record to his name. As the winner of the Nations Cup, a qualifying event for the Viessmann Luge World Cup, the 25-year-old set a track record of 53.013 seconds at the “Sliding Center Sanki”. This record was not improved at the World Cup final – not least due to the adverse weather conditions. Track records can only be set in international luge events. Because only national luge races will be carried out at the “Sliding Center Sanki” prior to the Olympic Games in February 2014, Carigiet’s track record will remain intact. At the World Cup Carigiet posted a 9th-place finish. The track record (50.894 seconds) in the women’s singles was set by overall Viessmann Luge World Cup winner Natalie Geisenberger of Germany. Even though the 25-year-old set the record in her first run of the World Cup it was compatriot Tatjana Huefner who eventually won the event. The track record in the doubles was set by World Champions and overall World Cup winners Tobias Wendl-Tobias Arlt of Germany. They clocked a time of 50.848 seconds on the future Olympic track.
