Oberhof (pps) The most successful women luge athlete, Germany’s Sylke Otto, retired today. Two days before the 6. Viessmann Luge World Cup the 37 year old women announced her retirement. “I’m pregnant”, she says on Friday.
Originally her goal was to win a medal at the World Champions ships in Igls at the beginning of February and to retire after this. But now her plans changed. Due to a crash at Königssee last Weekend and watching the crash of Russia’s Albert Demtschenko at Oberhof, she decided to quit immediately. “”I don’t want to have fear any more. Sylke Otto won two Gold medals at the Olympics 2002 and 2006. She won four times the World Champions ships an four times the overall Viessmann World Cup. With a total number of 37 victories at Viessmann Luge World cup she is the record winning women.
