Sigulda (pps) Armin Zoeggeler has added another success to his already long list of victories. At the final of the Viessmann Luge World Cup in Sigulda, Latvia, the record World champion (six titles) from Italy celebrated his 54th individual victory and secured his tenth overall World Cup. Thus the two-time Olympic champion (2002 and 2006) is now tied with record-winner Markus Prock of Austria. Zoeggeler’s only serious contender at the season’s final, Olympic champion Felix Loch of Germany, had to make do with a 14th place in Sigulda. In the overall rankings Loch now holds second position behind Zoeggeler (765 points) with 658 points to his credit.
Russia’s Albert Demchenko, who celebrated his first season’s victory on his home track in Paranomovo last weekend, finished in second position in Sigulda and thus improved to third place on the overall rankings (514 points). After quite a long silence the 2006 Olympic bronze medallist Martins Rubenis created a surprise by achieving third place on his home-track.
The Quotes
Armin Zoeggeler (ITA / six-time World and two-time Olympic champion)
“That was really a great season, perhaps even one my best so far. World Championship title and then the tenth overall World Cup title that goes to the luger with the most constant performances during the season. Well, I’ll surely compete next season as well, provided I’m healthy. And after that I’ll decide on the big question – tackling another Olympic Games or not.”
Felix Loch (GER / 2010 Olympic champion, two-time World champion)
“Last winter third in the overall World Cup rankings, this time runner-up. Let’s wait and see what happens next season. Due to injury I had missed the training course last autumn and the consequences were quite obvious in today’s event.”
