Calgary (pps) Nine years ago, Armin Zoeggeler won the third of his altogether five World Championship titles in Calgary. Now the 36-year old luger from Italy celebrated his second season’s victory at the Canada Olympic Park – the third consecutive win in Calgary and the now 51st success of his career in the Viessmann Luge World Cup. On the track of the 1988 Olympic Games the two-time Olympic champion defeated Russia’s Viktor Kneyb (0.261 seconds behind) who finished in second place. This is the best career result for the 30-year old luger from Russia who achieved a third position in Innsbruck-Igls in the Olympic season. Germany’s Olympic champion Felix Loch (0.311 seconds behind) took third place.
Quotes
Armin Zoeggeler (ITA / 2002 and 2006 Olympic and five-time World champion)
“I’m a bit surprised myself about the way things are running so smoothly here in Calgary. I think that the good material has been the key to success.”
Viktor Kneyb (RUS / 2007 World Championship 8th-placed)
“This is best result of my career. Of course I’m happy. And it’s just great to be on the podium for the victory ceremony next to Armin Zoeggeler and Felix Loch.”
Felix Loch (GER / 2010 Olympic as well as 2008 and 2009 World champion)
“Ahead of the second run I said to Georg Hackl – I dont’ want to finish twice in a row on fourth place just like in Winterberg. So we changed the set-up, or rather used a different sled. And things worked out far better...”
