Oberhof (RWH) Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt of Germany continue to race forwards in the Viessmann Luge World Cup. At the fifth stop in the racing series, the Olympic Champions gained their third victory in succession, shortening the gap in the overall standings between themselves and the leaders to 55 points after seven of twelve races. Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken are still in the lead with 655 points after a surprise defeat on their home track in the Thuringian Forest, where they came second just 17 thousands of a second behind the winners. Third place went to Russia’s Alexandr Denisyev and Vladislav Antonov, the best result in their career to date. Today’s victory is the 26th victory in a Viessmann World Cup for Wendl-Arlt, who won the Sprint World Cup in Calgary und the Viessmann World Cup on the Königssee ice track. Eggert-Benecken (655 points) and Wendl-Arlt (600 points) are followed in the overall rankings by Latvia’s Andris Sics and Juris Sics (399 points), who came fifth in Oberhof. Peter Penz and Georg Fischler of Austria were placed fourth in Oberhof and are also fourth in the rankings with 394 points. Quotes Tobias Wendl (GER / 2014 Olympic Champion and 2013 World Champion) “I feel for Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken. It would be a real slap in the face for us if we were to lose on our home track in Königssee. And that must be how Toni and Sascha feel here.” Toni Eggert (GER / 2012 and 2013 World Championship silver medallist) “We’re only talking about 17 thousands of a second. But we’re not where we wanted to be. We made a serious mistake that was perhaps not really visible, but that cost us so much time. And now we’ve lost another 15 points on our lead.”
