Tobias Wendl crowns a perfect week with his partner Tobias Arlt

Tobias Wendl / Tobias Arlt Sprint WM

Königssee (FIL): What a week for Tobias Wendl. On Tuesday, the double Olympic champion had become father to his newborn son, followed on Friday by the World Championship title in the Sprint at the 50th FIL World Championships on his home track at Koenigssee together with his partner Tobias Arlt. "This is the perfect week, a jackpot week," said the 33-year-old from Berchtesgaden, "I'm at a loss for words right now."

Especially because things didn't go that well in the qualification. The two Berchtesgadeners were 0.332 seconds behind the fastest, World Cup winners Thomas Steu/Lorenz Koller (Austria). "We analyzed it again, reworked everything," said Arlt, "fortunately it went in the right direction."

Second place went to brothers Andris and Juris Sics of Latvia ahead of Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken. "We are super happy with the first sprint World Cup medal of our career. The run had small mistakes from the start and we have to get a grip on those tomorrow," analysed Andris Sics after the competition. For the best in the qualifiers, Steu/Koller came in fourth place. Thomas Steu was not completely satisfied: "In the qualification we were still super fast. In the final in the afternoon it was not enough for the podium. The run was not bad, but we should do better tomorrow".
