Fourth Place at Torino 2006 and seven US-Titles Lake Placid (pps) Tony Benshoof, three-time Olympian, winner of 37 international medals and the most successful men’s luge athlete in USA Luge history, has announced his retirement from the sport after 22 years of competition. This was published in a press release by the US-Federation (USAL) in Lake Placid. Benshoof, 36 years old, is the top finishing American male in the singles division of Olympic luge racing. He finished in fourth place at the 2006 Olympics in Torino, Italy, the topmost place for the US men at the Olympics. In addition, he won seven national singles titles, a record shared with past sliders Cameron Myler and Frank Masley. Despite the passage of time and rehabilitation following various back injuries, Benshoof has not felt comfortable enough to return to competitive sliding. “It was a great run and I’m going to miss the team and the organization,” said Benshoof. “Hopefully I can stay involved in one capacity or another.”
