Park City pps) It is an absolute rarity in the Viessmann Luge World Cup: two doubles’ teams posted exactly the same time and thus shared the top spot of the podium in Park City. Austria’s Andreas Linger-Wolfgang Linger and compatriots Peter Penz-Georg Fischler achieved this feat. For Penz-Fischler it was the first World Cup victory of their career, for two-time Olympic champions Linger-Linger it was already the eighth success.
The last time two teams shared a victory occurred in the 2002-2003 season when, ironically, the current U.S. Sport Program Director Mark Grimmette, with back driver Brian Martin, tied to the thousandth with Germans Patric Leitner and Alexander Resch.
The American performance that final day of the season in Winterberg, Germany, secured the overall World Cup doubles crown for Grimmette and Martin by only nine points over Leitner and Resch..
Both went on to Olympic greatness before ending their careers; the Germans won gold and bronze, while the U.S. team scored silver and bronze before stepping off the track for the last time shortly after the Vancouver Winter Games..
.Finishing in third position, Germany’s Tobias Wendl-Tobias Arlt maintained their lead in the overall Viessmann Luge World Cup with now 330 points to their credit. On second place follow Italy’s Christian Oberstolz-Patrick Gruber (315), who earned a fourth place in Park City, ahead of Penz-Fischler (280) and Linger-Linger (276). .
The Quotes.
Andreas Linger (AUT / 2006 and 2010 Olympic champion).
“We’ve been joking about it among us that it would be great to share the top spot of the podium. Well, it feels like a dream that it really happened that way. So now we can really relax and head into the Christmas break.”.
Peter Penz (AUT / World Cup winner Park City and 2007 World bronze medallist Team Event).
“That’s sheer madness. We’ve worked so hard for this success. We’ve had a good start into the season with a third place in Igls. We know that if we can keep up with Linger-Linger in the training sessions we’re in for a good position in the race. And now we’re sharing first place – that’s really the cherry on the icing.”.
Tobias Arlt (GER / 2008 World silver medallist, 2010 European runner-up).
“Oh please, no more questions about us following in the footsteps... We are very happy. This is the first time we competed on this track and we’ve worked hard to achieve this third place. However, those two runs were not really flawless and we could have been even better. But to be honest – I don’t think we could have caught up with the two Austrian doubles.”
