Steffi Walter celebrates a big birthday Großdubrau (pps) Mostly unnoticed by the public one of the big stars in the sport of luge celebrated a big birthday. Steffi Walter, Olympic champion at the 1984 Games in Sarajevo under her maiden name Martin and again four years later in Calgary, celebrated her 50th birthday on September 17, 2012 in her hometown of Großdubrau with friends and family. Apart from her two Olympic gold medals Steffi Walter also earned the World Championship titles in 1983 and 1985 as well as the overall World Cup crown in 1984. Thanks to these successes the former track-and-field athlete is - besides two-time Olympic and six-time World champion (4x singles and 2x team) Sylke Otto - one of the most successful lugers of all times. Steffi Walter has three children (Sebastian, Sabrina and Simin). In 1998 she became an honorary citizen of her native town Lauter.
