Who Is the World Cup GOAT of Luge? You Decide!
There are questions that have no definitive answer. And that is precisely why they are worth asking.
"Greatest of All Time" – GOAT – is the most wonderful and most impossible title in sport. Impossible, because it depends on so many factors. How many overall World Cup titles has someone won? Over how many years? Against whom? Under what conditions? And who is doing the judging – a fan from the 1990s who watched Markus Prock on television? Or someone who only discovered luge through Julia Taubitz? The GOAT of luge cannot be proven. It is an opinion. And that is exactly what makes the question so irresistible.
From 22 July, we are launching a poll on our social media channels covering all four disciplines of the FIL World Cup. Based purely on overall World Cup titles – meaning those who delivered the most consistent and strongest performances across an entire season. No Olympic medals, no World Championship titles. Just the World Cup. Who, across more than a thousand races and 49 seasons, has left the deepest mark?
Here are a few things to think about before you vote.
In Men's Singles, a double act leads the all-time rankings that not many people will know: Markus Prock (AUT) and Armin Zöggeler (ITA) share the record with ten overall World Cup titles each. Behind them comes Felix Loch (GER) with eight. And then? A certain Max Langenhan (GER), who is only just beginning to write his story.
In Women's Singles, Natalie Geisenberger (GER) has set a benchmark with eight overall titles that seems carved in stone. Seems. Because Julia Taubitz (GER) is still racing – and has already won six times.
In Men's Doubles, the record holder is a pairing that will surprise many: Hansjörg Raffl and Norbert Huber (ITA) won the overall World Cup eight times – more than any other duo in the history of the discipline. Behind them: Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt (GER) with seven, and Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken (GER) as well as Patric Leitner and Alexander Resch (GER) with six each.
In Women's Doubles – the youngest discipline in the World Cup, introduced only in 2021/22 – the story is still being written. Two overall titles each so far: Selina Egle and Lara Kipp (AUT) and Andrea Vötter and Marion Oberhofer (ITA). The GOAT debate here is happening in real time.
But back to the real question. Is the GOAT someone who dominates a discipline for years on end? Or someone who delivers in the moments that matter most? Someone who electrifies a crowd? Or someone who quietly and relentlessly wins season after season? There is no wrong answer. There is only your answer.
Use the summer to discuss, to remember, to be surprised – and to vote. The 50. World Cup Season of the fastest sport on ice will kick off in Winterberg. Until then, the FIL summer belongs to you. Vote from 22 July on Instagram and Facebook!
