Lake Placid (RWH) Tobias Wendl/Tobias Arlt of Germany have celebrated their 43rd individual victory in the Viessmann World Cup and further extended their lead in the all-time standings. The two-time Olympic Champions in the doubles clinched their first win of the Viessmann Luge World Cup season on the ice track at Mount van Houvenberg in Lake Placid, NY. Wendl/Arlt finished ahead of their teammates Toni Eggert/Sascha Benecken in second place. Eggert/Benecken had won the season opener in Innsbruck –  the 40th individual victory of their careers. Like last week, third place went to the Austrian pairing of Thomas Steu/Lorenz Koller.

The USA’s Chris Mazdzer/Jayson Terdiman were in a promising fifth place at the halfway point, but lost any hope of a strong finish after a crash on the second run.

After two of twelve events, Eggert/Benecken and Wendl/Arlt hold the joint lead in the overall World Cup standings with 185 points apiece. Steu/Koller are currently in third (140).

Quotes

Tobias Wendl (GER / Olympic Champion 2014 and 2018)

“We’re getting older so we have more experience. We drove our best ever time on the Lake Placid track. The whole week has been a lot of fun. The new sled is really nice to drive. We’ve had some bad luck here in the past so we’re pretty happy.”

Toni Eggert (GER / Olympic bronze medallist in 2018, World Champion in 2017 and 2019)

“We experienced a lot of difficulties throughout the training week. We were able to get things sorted in the race. The bottom line is that everything still looks OK in the overall World Cup standings.”

Thomas Steu (AUT / World Championship bronze medallist 2019)

“We really struggled in training. We tried out some new equipment and stuck to our guns. I think it was worth the risk."
