Park City (pps) The everlasting duel in the doubles between Germany and Austria was continued at the Viessmann Luge World Cup in Park City, USA. At the fifth stop of the World Cup series the winners were Tobias Wendl-Tobias Arlt and it was the 4th victory for the World champions in the Olympic season.

It was the 33rd successive victory for a doubles team of either Austria or Germany. On the Olympic luge track of the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Wendl-Arlt celebrated their 21st individual victory. Austria’s two-time Olympic Champions Andreas Linger-Wolfgang Linger and Toni Eggert-Sascha Benecken from Germany claimed a second and third place result, respectively.

World Champions Tobias Wendl-Tobias Arlt are currently heading the overall Viessmann Luge World Cup rankings with 485 points to their credit ahead of compatriots Eggert-Benecken (360 points) and Italy’s Christian Oberstolz-Patrick Gruber (302).

Quotes

Tobias Wendl (GER / 2013 World Champion, overall Viessmann Luge World Cup Champion in 2010-2011 and 2012-2013)

“We haven’t raced here in Park City that often and this is why it was a bit of work to get to know the track well. Thanks to the start record in the first run we had a small advantage. The second run wasn’t as good as the first, despite another start record. We’re only taking it one race at a time and we want to further improve. We’ve managed quite well so far doing just that. And to be honest, it’s not really our kind of thing to rely on some kind of omen.”

Wolfgang Linger (AUT / 2006 and 2010 Olympic Champion, three-time World Champion)

“We made a lot of little mistakes in the first run and they just added up. Well, the second run was far better. We’re working hard to defeat the German lugers.”
